Rainbow Crosswalks and Safer Streets Coming to Oaklawn

Rainbow Crosswalks are going up on Cedar Springs between Douglas and Oak Lawn.

Plans are almost complete and work to “remodel” Cedar Springs Road is about to begin according the Mayor’s LGBT Task Force. They plan to mark areas of Cedar Springs at Douglas and Oak Lawn avenues. Rainbow crosswalks are planned for the street as well as four crosswalks at Throckmorton and two at Knight and Reagan streets.

Update October 17, 2019:

Construction on street improvements are set to begin on Cedar Springs Road soon.

The project originally set to begin October 1 was pushed back a few weeks so it would not interfere with the block party on October 26 and will instead start on October 28.

Work upgrading, landscaping and marking the entertainment district will take six months and should be completed by May, 2020.

The rainbow crosswalks will be the last element added to Cedar Springs Road. The rainbow crosswalk project is still only at 7% of $50k goal as of October 2019. More details are here https://fundrazr.com/DallasCrosswalkProject.

On top of a new traffic light that will be installed at Knight there will also be “bump outs” installed to narrow the crossing at several intersections.

New landscaping will be installed along the gayborhood walk of fame with the overall goal of the entire project to slow traffic on Cedar Springs.

New sidewalks will be built with ADA curbs. At the Crossroads, there will be more room on the sidewalk for groups to set up tables, as was common during the decades when Crossroads Market occupied the space now anchored by Hunky’s. Lighting in the area will also be improved according to sources.

Murals are yet another new feature to be included in the beautification projects. One mural commemorating the AIDS crisis, painted by Arttitude volunteers and funded by The Red Foundation, was recently completed on the Nelson-Tebedo Clinic wall.

Across from that wall will be a mural commemorating the 50th anniversary of Stonewall and the drag queens and transgender activists who rioted for LGBT rights. At 10 a.m. on March 16, designers of the wall will hold a listening session at Zephyr, 4001 Cedar Springs Road, to hear what community members would like to see on the wall.

“In remembrance of the fiftieth anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, you are invited to join artist Lee Madrid, the Cedar Springs Merchants Association, neighbors, AARP Texas, and friends for an imagination session where you can contribute your ideas for an outdoor mural in the heart of Dallas.

Put your creativity on display and join us on the following dates:

• 10 – 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 16, 2019
• 5:30 – 7 p.m. Saturday, March 19, 2019
• 10 – 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 23, 2019

Snacks and materials will be provided. You do not have to be an AARP member or an artist to participate. RSVP is appreciated.

Special thanks to Arttitude for allowing DMAP and Lee Madrid, Artist, to serve on board from March through September 2018.”

The funding for this major project in the Oaklawn area will come from a $1.2 million 2012 bond election designated for Cedar Springs improvements. Other bond money projects include popular Deep Ellum and Greenville Avenue areas.
